So What Do All These Abbreviations Actually Mean?
Let’s break down the wonderful world of wastewater alphabet soup.
HSTP — Home Sewage Treatment Plant
This is one of the most commonly used terms in Queensland.
A HSTP is a system that:
- treats household wastewater
- reduces contaminants
- safely disperses treated water
This is the term many homeowners and wastewater professionals use day-to-day.
AWTS — Aerated Wastewater Treatment System
This is another very common name.
AWTS systems use:
- aeration
- bacteria
- multiple treatment chambers
to treat wastewater to a higher standard than a traditional septic system.
👉 In many cases:
AWTS = HSTP
Just different wording.
ATU — Aerobic Treatment Unit
Now we’re really getting technical.
An ATU is essentially describing the:
👉 aerobic treatment component of the system.
This refers to the section where:
- air is introduced
- bacteria break down waste
Again, very similar concept—just another term used in the industry.
OSSF — On-Site Sewage Facility
This is one of the more official or regulatory terms.
OSSF basically means:
👉 any wastewater treatment system located on a property.
This can include:
- septic systems
- HSTP systems
- AWTS systems
It’s a broad term often used by councils, regulators, and paperwork.
STS — Secondary Treatment System
This one refers to the level of treatment.
A STS treats wastewater beyond primary septic treatment by using:
- aeration
- clarification
- disinfection

It’s another way of describing an advanced treatment system like a HSTP.
And Then There’s…
Depending on who you talk to, you might also hear:
- aerobic septic system
- treatment plant
- sewerage treatment plant
- home treatment system
- aerated septic system
At some point it starts feeling like every manufacturer and council decided to invent their own name for the same thing.
So What’s the Difference?
Honestly?
👉 Most of the time, not a lot.
While some systems are designed differently or use slightly different components, the majority of modern systems all work using the same basic principles:
✔ primary treatment
✔ aeration
✔ biological breakdown
✔ clarification
✔ disinfection
✔ dispersal
Different names. Same general idea.
Why So Many Different Names?
There are a few reasons:
- manufacturers market systems differently
- councils use formal terminology
- plumbers and installers use industry shorthand
- homeowners use whatever term they’ve heard before
So one homeowner might call it:

…and another calls it:
